  • After returning from the Pran-Pratishtha program, PM Modi announced the Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana. With this, people are going to get rid of electricity bills soon. The objective of this scheme is to reduce the electricity bills of poor and middle class people. Let us know about this scheme.

What is Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana ? 

  • Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana is a centrally sponsored scheme, under this, rooftop solar panels will be installed on more than 1 crore houses, with the help of which people will get a clean source of energy. Also its objective is to bring self-reliance in the energy sector.
  • This scheme is a new effort to help reach the target of 40 GW rooftop solar capacity.
  • It aims to install rooftop solar power systems for residential consumers.
  • This scheme will not only help in reducing the electricity bills of the poor and middle class, but will also achieve the goal of India becoming self-reliant in the energy sector.
  • Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana launched by the Prime Minister aims to include poor and middle class individuals under the rooftop solar program.

Who will get the benefit of this scheme :-

  • Applicants must be permanent residents of India.
  • The annual income of the applicants should not exceed Rs 1 or 1.5 lakh.
  • All required documents must be submitted or uploaded correctly. 
  • The applicant should not be associated with any government service.

Solar program is included in the major agenda of the government :-

  • Promoting rooftop solar program is included in the main agenda of Modi government. This is not the first time that the government has launched such a scheme. Even before this, such initiative has been taken by the government. In 2014, the government launched the Rooftop Solar Program with the aim of achieving solar capacity of 40,000 MW or 40 GW by 2022.

Present solar capacity of India :-

  • According to the website of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, by December 2023, solar power installed capacity in India has reached about 73.31 GW. Meanwhile, the rooftop solar capacity by December 2023 is about 11.08 GW. According to the World Energy Outlook, India is expected to have the largest increase in energy demand in the next 30 years compared to any country or region in the world, so such programs can meet India’s energy needs.
